What do you really, really want #rethink A few years ago I was invited to speak at an event in Charlotte, North Carolina.  Charlotte was beyond charming, and I loved every minute of it there.  The people were over-the-top nice. On the morning of my presentation, my ride picked me up and we drove towards the event center.  She explained that Charlotte was a huge financial/banking hub, and if I remember correctly, second in importance to Wall Street.  I didnt realize how big and important this little town was. We drove through the downtown area, surrounded by majestic buildings that were more beautiful than overwhelming (like New York or Chicago or San Francisco), and something stood out: the people looked grumpy. Maybe they looked grumpy because of how early it was in the day.  Maybe they just had their game face on, and were thinking about all of the things they were going to do. Whatever the reason was, I was struck by the contrast between these well-dressed, job-ful people, and the hundred or so unemployed professionals I would be meeting in a few minutes. Speaking of contrast when I walked into the event center I was greeted by loud talking, laughing, smiles, and apparently happy people.  Of course, I know that many of those people were in the midst of their own battles, and the unwritten rule of going to job clubs was that you had to bring a smiley face and a cheerful attitude, but at no point did I feel that any of their smiles or laughing was not authentic. Contrast.  Grumpy unhappy people with jobs vs. happy, smiling people who wanted jobs.   Why is that? When I was in my own job search, it was a time of self-reflection and recalibration.  Im not saying I was happier unemployed, but I was able to get grounded, instead of running a thousand miles an hour for someone else.  Im not saying that people who are unemployed dont worry about paying their rent, mortgage or grocery bills but perhaps theres something that happens when you get some time FOR YOURSELF, think about who you are, and what really matters. When you get to (or, are forced to) start over, and you can now pick a career path, do you go after more money, even if it means going into a high stress situation that you dont like, working with people you dont like, for a boss you dont like?  Or do you start to think Hm maybe we change our lifestyle a bit, and I can do something with purpose maybe even something that will impact peoples lives? I know that in a job search you feel like you are drowning, and its unfair to suggest that this is a good or special time. What I saw in Charlotte, though, was people who were able to see beyond the drowning, and love and enjoy and live, instead of the employed people probably making six figures, who looked like they would have rather been in the event center where I was, with a bunch of happy people. Why Successful Poker Players and Successful Business Owners are Alike The phenomenal growth of poker over the past decade or so has completely erased any false concepts concerning professional poker players. Today professional poker players are held in the same esteem as professional athletes, CEO’s and movie stars.   The top tournament money winner of all time Daniel Negreanu has appeared in movies and even a Katy Perry music video.   All time WSOP bracelet winner Phil Helmuth appears in a US television commercial for a hamburger takeaway restaurant.   Danish pro Gus Hansen was named one of People magazines Sexiest Men in the World. This was not always the case. Doyle Brunson, who is now one of the most respected men in poker, once faked an illness to avoid winning a WSOP championship to avoid the publicity and the “stigma” of being a professional poker player. The general public and the media have realised what poker players have long known; professional poker is a business and the skills developed at the table are the same skills that are necessary to be a successful entrepreneur or CEO.   It is not just happenstance that Bill Gates, Richard Nixon and other US presidents, and dozens of the world’s most successful business men all played poker. Knowing the market â€" Poker players select their tables and events carefully. They are aware of the competition they will face and the amount of their bankroll (capital) they will need to invest.   That is no different than knowing the competitors in a business sector and their exploitable weaknesses. Knowledge and preparation â€" Poker players spend almost as much time studying the game as they do playing the game.   Being a successful poker player takes more than just knowing the rules of the game.   Just like successful people in any other business, the players read books and articles on the game, discuss the game with others, and even seek out mentors. Develop a style â€" Every successful business and every successful poker player has its own unique style.   It is almost impossible to achieve long term success in either arena without a style that sets you apart from your competitors. Know the Odds â€" At its heart, poker is a game of mathematics.   In any business, the owner must have a strong knowledge of the probabilities.   Successful poker players and successful business owners take a long-term view and base their decisions on a strong mathematical foundation. Risk vs. Reward â€" Overly cautious poker players and overly cautious businesses are not usually successful.     By the same token, those that are blindly aggressive are prone to failure.   Success in both areas requires taking calculated risks and knowing which ones are most likely to achieve favorable results. Patience â€" Few poker players or businesses achieve success overnight.   Having the patience to wait for the most profitable opportunity and having the knowledge to capitalize on it are key qualities. There is one other aspect shared by successful poker players and business owners, though it isnt a skill.   Those that are successful in either love their work.   It is almost impossible to succeed in an endeavor that you don’t enjoy.

It is understanding, compassion and heart that moves the conversation forward and will grow current plus future sales. This is where good word of mouth comes alive in the format of testimonials and referrals. Less physical activity than that is actually harmful. Spending a day sitting in your car, at your desk, in your car and on the couch in front of the TV is as unhealthy as smoking a pack of cigarettes. No kidding! Most of us today have jobs that are high on brain activity and low on physical activity not good. A body is more than that thing, that carries my head from one meeting to the next, and the state of your body is vital for your physical well-being and for your creativity and energy. So today, do what you would normally do but move your body while you do it. Walk around a little while talking on the phone. Have a stand-up meeting. Sit as little as possible. Walk over to talk to colleagues, instead of emailing or phoning. Basically use every chance you get to activate your body. Notice how it feels and how this may actually make you less tired both mentally and physically than sitting passively in your chair all day.
